UC San Diego's Earth Month 2017
Sustainability, environmentalism and taking action against the threat of climate change will be at the center of UC San Diego's Earth Month celebration throughout April. This year's theme — UC San Diego: Using Science to Protect the Planet — will be woven into events designed to educate and engage the campus and community. Events range from a trash sort to a green job fair, the San Diego March for Science and much more.

Inter-Sustainability Council (ISC) 2017 Green Talks

Green Talks is similar to TED Talks. Six speakers from various fields discuss how their particular subjects relate to sustainability and how to get UC San Diego students and the community involved and increase environmentally conscious. RSVP
3rd Annual Public Health Research Day

Sponsored by the UC San Diego Institute for Public Health (IPH)
The event is designed to introduce campus and community attendees to current, multidisciplinary public health research and interventions on a variety of topics, including climate change. From 2–3 p.m., Dr. Alexander Gershunov of Scripps Institution of Oceanography will be part of a key not presentation panel on “Heat Waves, Human Health, and Disparities in San Diego County.” The poster session showcases public health research and community work being done by UC San Diego faculty and students, featuring up to 100 posters with presenters available for discussion. Energy Storage: The Synergies with Electric Vehicle Transportation and PV Solar Generation - A JCESR Symposium

Accommodation of increasing renewable generation, electric vehicles and energy storage presents some challenges. The University of California San Diego, in conjunction with the Argonne National Laboratory led Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR), is hosting a regional event to explore challenges and opportunities of these technologies. Participants will hear leading experts discuss important issues of how these technologies can be integrated successfully. This event will serve as a forum for industry, utility companies, academic and government researchers, and policy makers to discuss energy storage and potential major applications facing California and the South West region. JCESR is a major research partnership that integrates government, academic, and industrial researchers from many disciplines to create new breakthrough energy storage technology. Annual Life Sciences Sustainability Fair

In support of UC San Diego’s Principles of Sustainability and in honor of Earth Day 2017, the campus is hosting the third annual Life Sciences Sustainability Fair. This fair is intended to bring awareness of sustainability-related research being conducted in the community as well as inform researchers of resources available to them on how they can make environmentally preferable behavior changes in their lab to foster sustainable research.

Join leading scientists, engineers, students and key stakeholders from the energy, policy and social science communities to discuss CER’s key research areas and the challenges we face to sustainably meet the world’s growing energy needs. Housing, Dining & Hospitality EcoNauts Trash Sort
Friday, April 21, 11 a.m.
Students and staff will dig through hundreds of pounds of trash to demonstrate how much of ordinary garbage is comprised of items that can be recycled.
San Diego March for Science
April 22, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Beginning at San Diego Civic Center Plaza
The March for Science, taking place on Earth Day, is an effort comprised of hundreds of independent, nonpartisan coordinators. With the main event taking place in Washington, D.C., the San Diego march will complement the efforts taking place in the nation’s capital with the same mission to champion publicly funded and publicly communicated science as a pillar of human freedom and prosperity. UC San Diego’s Community Sustainability Fair
April 24, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
As a part of UC San Diego’s Earth Month celebration, the Sustainability Resource Center is hosting a campus Community Sustainability Fair in Town Square. The fair will provide an opportunity for faculty, staff, students and the public to meet with local solar, electric vehicle, energy efficiency and water conservation experts to learn how they can make their everyday lives more sustainable at home and work. Organized presentations on the benefits of going solar will be provided by the Center for Sustainable Energy, Climate Action Campaign and Sullivan Solar.

Students are invited to network with green companies, nonprofit organizations, community resilience programs and student organizations at this event. Participants are urged to make connections with potential future employers and spark new conversations regarding sustainability topics, ranging from permaculture and solar panels to the importance of community gardens. Arbor Day Tree Planting
Friday, April 28, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Eleanor Roosevelt College, Housing West
In recognition of both Earth Day and Arbor Day — a national holiday where individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees — UC San Diego volunteers will plant trees at various campus locations. Volunteers should gather at the Eleanor Roosevelt College, Housing West at 11 a.m. for light refreshments. The tree planting will be sponsored by West Coast Arborists, who will kick off the event with an educational program and ceremonial tree planting. Volunteers and UC San Diego landscape technicians will disperse to the Marshall Community Garden, Muir College, Birch Aquarium and Mesa Graduate Housing to plant additional trees.
